FMG

Problem:

FMG needed a new crane maintenance platform for its Cloudbreak mine. To maintain the crane, workers had to step off an elevated walkway platform onto to the service walkway. Because of the danger, each access had to be signed off by the mine manager which took days.

The previous engineer had designed one that wouldn’t work. The excessive weight meant it couldn’t be mounted to the existing structure. The new design had to allow for space underneath to fit in the machinery. The structure had to be cyclone rated and made from mild steel not aluminium so any repairs or future modifications could be made on site.

Solution:

Conquest Group came up with a design for external tower access made from mild steel. Conquest pre-assembled as much as possible in the factory then transported the structure in three sections on the back of flat-bed trucks.

The new structure is 15 metres high and cantilevers three metres in from the wall. The design vastly improves worker safety so there’s no need for approval every time a worker needs access to the crane.
